When Maryssa and Joe chose Princeton University for their New Jersey engagement photos, they had a clear vision. They wanted a location that matched the elegance and sophistication they felt on the day Joe proposed in Newport, Rhode Island. Furthermore, Princeton delivered that romantic, timeless atmosphere in every frame. This New Jersey Princeton University Engagement perfectly captured their love story in one of New Jersey’s most iconic settings.
As a New Jersey engagement photographer, I’m often asked about the best historic locations. Specifically, couples want images that feel both romantic and editorial. Consequently, Princeton University consistently tops that list, and for good reason.
The campus offers an incredible variety of backdrops within a compact area. For instance, the Gothic architecture creates dramatic, magazine-worthy settings. Meanwhile, the open courtyards and tree-lined paths provide intimate spaces for candid moments. Additionally, during winter, the bare branches and soft light add a romantic quality. As a result, every image feels timeless.
What makes Princeton University engagement sessions truly special is the sense of place. In fact, the historic buildings tell a story of legacy and permanence. This symbolism is perfect for couples beginning their own lasting story together.
Their connection began in an unexpected way. Although they knew each other in high school, they didn’t truly connect until years later. Eventually, Joe messaged Maryssa on Instagram, and the rest was history. Their first date at Ben and Jerry’s set the tone for their relationship. It was full of laughter, sweetness, and genuine connection. In fact, Joe spent the entire first date helping clean ice cream off her leg. If that’s not a sign of true love, what is?
“My favorite attribute about Joe is how ride-or-die he is for those he loves,” Maryssa shared. Moreover, she explained, “He is a military man and police officer, so he puts others before himself naturally.” Additionally, “He is the most loyal person on the planet. Once he considers you family, you know you are safe with him.”
Their relationship is a beautiful balance. Specifically, he’s introverted while she’s extroverted. Together, they love experiencing new restaurants and finding new favorite spots. Furthermore, their shared love of country music and EDM creates an admittedly odd but perfect mix. This music plays during every adventure. When planning their Princeton University engagement session, they wanted photos that reflected this deep connection and playful dynamic.
Joe planned the perfect surprise proposal in Newport, Rhode Island. This location is now their favorite place. Under the guise of visiting a military museum, he brought Maryssa to the Goat Island Light House. However, when she turned around after taking a photo of the lighthouse, he was down on one knee. The moment was pure magic. As a result, Newport will forever hold a special place in their hearts.
For their New Jersey engagement photos, Maryssa and Joe had specific goals. They wanted images that captured how deeply in love they are right now. “I want to remember how in love and obsessed we are with each other, especially during this time of our lives,” Maryssa explained. Furthermore, she added, “I want to be able to look at these pictures and feel the love emanating from the image.”
They chose an elegant winter aesthetic for their session. Specifically, Maryssa wore a stunning white lace gown with long sleeves. Meanwhile, Joe complemented her in a classic dark suit. The formality of their attire worked beautifully with Princeton’s architecture. As a result, we created images that feel both timeless and editorial.
We focused on a mix of styles throughout the session. First, we captured sweeping shots that showcased Princeton’s grand architecture. Next, we created intimate detail shots of their hands and rings. Additionally, we captured candid moments filled with genuine laughter. Finally, we created those editorial romantic poses that look straight out of a magazine. The result was a gallery that perfectly balanced classic elegance with authentic emotion.
If you’re drawn to the historic elegance of Princeton University engagement sessions, you’re in luck. New Jersey offers several other stunning locations worth considering.
Skylands Manor – This castle in Ringwood State Park offers Gothic architecture and formal gardens. In fact, these gardens rival European estates. Recently, I captured Shlomi and Erica’s engagement session at Skylands Manor. The dramatic stone architecture created the most romantic, fairytale atmosphere.
Sayen House and Gardens – Located in Hamilton, this hidden gem features 30 acres of stunning gardens. It’s perfect for romantic spring and summer engagement sessions. You can see the beauty of this location in this Sayen House and Gardens engagement session I photographed. Additionally, you can visit Sayen House and Gardens to explore their seasonal blooms and peaceful pathways.
Cross Estate Gardens – Part of the Morristown National Historical Park, these formal walled gardens are spectacular. They provide an intimate, European-inspired setting. Moreover, the historic stone structures and meticulously maintained gardens create timeless backdrops.
Van Vleck House & Gardens – Montclair – This historic estate features terraced gardens and stunning seasonal blooms. Therefore, it offers a more intimate alternative to larger venues with a focus on horticultural beauty.
Each of these locations brings its own character to New Jersey engagement photos. However, they all share that sense of timeless romance that makes a Princeton University engagement session such a beloved choice for couples throughout New Jersey and beyond.
Maryssa and Joe will tie the knot in December at The Reserve at Perona Farms. This venue is one of New Jersey’s most elegant wedding venues. They chose Perona Farms because it captured Maryssa’s heart the moment she walked in. Immediately, she knew it was where she wanted to marry Joe. Just like their Princeton University engagement session captured their romantic connection, their Perona Farms wedding will celebrate their love surrounded by family and friends.
Their December wedding will feature beautiful details throughout. Specifically, white roses and baby’s breath will be paired with lush greenery. Additionally, bridesmaids will wear emerald green. Gold accents will appear throughout the decor. Ultimately, it’s going to be a celebration of the love and loyalty that defines their relationship, surrounded by everyone who matters most.
